Ammonites are members of a group of extinct marine mollusks that is most related to modern day cuttlefish, squid and octopuses. The shells are subdivided into separate chambers, in contrast to the shells of gastropods. The different species can be recognized on the basis of the shape of the dividing walls, called septa. This group appeared around 409 million years ago, and went extinct during the fifth mass extinction event around 66 million years ago.
